tmux agent managers for claude code

TL;DR

tmux agent managers run your coding agents inside tmux sessions and give you one keyboard-driven screen to start them, watch them and jump between them. They're light, work over SSH, and keep agents alive when you disconnect.

They split into two groups. Runners like Claude Squad and Sidecar start agents and give each one a git worktree. Watchers like claude-tmux and recon only show which Claude Code session needs you. Herdr does the same job without tmux.

All of them need Linux, macOS or WSL. Pane does the same job as a desktop app with its own terminals, natively on Windows too.

Runners: start and manage agents

These start agents for you and keep each one on its own worktree. Pick one of these if you want a tmux tool to do the whole job.

Claude Squad is the best known, with about 8,500 GitHub stars: a list of agents on the left, a preview on the right, and keys to pause, resume and push. It's in maintenance mode, with its last release in August 2026. Sidecar adds live git diffs, notes and to-dos around your agents. Herdr isn't built on tmux, but it fills the same role as an agent-aware multiplexer, and it's the fastest-growing tool in this group.

Watchers: see which agent needs you

These sit on top of sessions you started yourself. They answer one question well: which agent is waiting?

claude-tmux is a popup with status lights for each Claude Code session, plus quick git actions. It hasn't had a commit since April 2026. recon shows the same status as a table or as pixel-art creatures that fall asleep, work, or get angry when they need you.

We haven't tested these hands-on yet. Each repo was checked as active in October 2026.

Short descriptions come from each project's own page; we haven't rated them.

  • dmux · A tmux pane manager that starts Claude Code, opencode or Codex sessions, each on its own worktree and branch.
  • agent-deck · A terminal session manager for Claude, Gemini, OpenCode, Codex and other agents in one TUI.
  • agent-view · A light tmux session manager with live agent status and notifications when an agent finishes or needs input.
  • tcmux · A viewer for terminal and coding-agent sessions running in tmux.
  • Coral · Formerly Corral. Now describes itself as an agentic IDE for Claude Code, Codex CLI, Antigravity CLI and Pi.

On Windows

tmux tools need WSL. That works, but you live in a Linux terminal.

Claude Squad's Windows build exists but can't start agents without tmux, so on Windows you install it inside WSL, along with tmux, and keep the repo on the Linux filesystem. claude-tmux and recon are the same. Herdr has a native Windows build, and its Linux build runs well inside WSL.

If you'd rather not run your agents through WSL at all, see agent managers for Windows.

How to choose

Start with where you work, then decide whether you want a runner or a watcher.

  • → You live in tmux and want the whole workflow there: Claude Squad or Sidecar.
  • → You want agents to survive a closed laptop on a server: Herdr.
  • → You already start agents yourself and only lose track: recon or claude-tmux.
  • → You want a diff viewer and notifications instead: a desktop agent manager such as Pane.
