Muster alternatives

TL;DR

Muster (musterup.dev, by an unnamed independent maker) is a paid desktop app for macOS, Linux and Windows that runs coding agents on tasks, with optional git worktrees, review of each changed block of code, and PRs from the app. It also bundles a database studio, an SSH client, issue-tracker imports, separate work and personal profiles, and scoped permissions on which tools and data each agent can reach (through MCP, the Model Context Protocol).

People look elsewhere because its last release, 1.6, shipped on August 8, 2026, about three months ago. It costs $39 per device, and the trial takes a card that's charged on day 7 unless you cancel. Builds cover Apple Silicon Macs and Intel or AMD (x64) Windows and Linux only.

Pane does the core job, agents in parallel with a worktree (its own copy of your repo, on its own branch) for each task, for free and with no card. It shipped v2.4.214 on November 5, 2026, and runs on Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, Windows on x64 and ARM64, WSL (Linux inside Windows) and Linux.

the alternatives

Each of these is open source and put out a release in the week before November 5, 2026. The chips show where each one runs: green is native, amber has a catch, red is no.

  1. 1.Pane

Best for a free, open-source app with a worktree per task, on every OS.

Worktrees are on for every task unless you switch them off, the reverse of Muster's default. Remote Pane runs the same app's host on your own server for remote work. Free, AGPL-3.0, no account.

    WindowsWSLmacOSLinux

  2. 2.Emdash

Best for agents on SSH remotes, with tasks from issue trackers.

Two Muster habits survive here: agents on SSH remotes, and tasks pulled from trackers like Linear, Jira and GitHub (12 in all). Apache-2.0, no account, no WSL mode.

    WindowsWSLmacOSLinux

  3. 3.Orca

Best for an all-in-one with SSH hosts and a phone app.

Muster's one-window idea, minus the database studio: about 40 agents, a diff viewer, commit and PR buttons, a browser, SSH hosts and an iOS app. MIT, on every OS including WSL.

    WindowsWSLmacOSLinux

  4. 4.Paseo

Best for agents on your own server, reachable from your phone, with no account.

Like Muster's daemon, it keeps agents running in the background, on your laptop or a server, and you reach them from desktop, phone, web or CLI through an encrypted relay. Apache-2.0, no account, no telemetry.

which one should you pick?

stay with muster if

  • → you want agents, a database studio, an SSH client and your tickets in one native window
  • → you want strict, per-task MCP grants on what an agent can read and write
  • → you keep work and personal AI accounts on one machine and want separate profiles for them
  • → you'd rather pay $39 once than subscribe, and 1.6 does what you need

pick pane if

  • → you want regular updates (Pane shipped v2.4.214 on November 5, 2026)
  • → you don't want to pay, or to hand over a card for a trial
  • → you're on an Intel Mac or Windows ARM64, or want documented support for repos inside WSL
  • → you want an open-source app

Muster facts checked on November 5, 2026, from its site, docs and changelog. Pane facts checked against Pane v2.4.214.

why people look for a muster alternative

No release since August 8, a card-up-front trial, and fewer builds.

Muster's changelog runs from 1.0 on July 13, 2026 to 1.6 on August 8, eight releases in four weeks, and nothing since. That's about three months without an update as of November 5. The site doesn't name who builds it.

It costs $39 per device, once. The trial changed in 1.6: you "Save a card, $0 charged today", and "On day 7 that card is charged $39 once" unless you cancel. Worktrees are off by default, set per project, and the site says scoped MCP permissions "don't reach remote agents yet".

moving from muster to pane

A Muster task becomes a pane, Pane's word for one task, and gets its own worktree without a setting to flip.

Muster's 23 adapters map to Pane's presets and custom commands: Claude Code and Codex start from presets, and Aider, Goose, Amp and the rest run as saved commands (Cursor is a preset on Mac, Linux and WSL, not native Windows yet). Each new pane copies your .env and agent config into its worktree.

If Muster ran agents on a remote host, install Remote Pane's host there and connect to it from the desktop app. Branches Muster left in worktrees are plain git, so you can open a pane on one and finish it.

our verdict

Muster packs a lot into one native app, and its per-task permissions and separate work and personal profiles are carefully built. If you want something free, open source and updated often, on every Mac and with documented WSL support, Pane is the most direct alternative. For SSH remotes and issue trackers, Emdash. For an all-in-one with SSH hosts and a phone app, Orca. For agents on your own server from your phone, Paseo.
