Glossary
what is an ade (agentic development environment)?
TL;DR
ADE stands for agentic development environment: a workspace built around running AI coding agents, where an IDE is built around you editing code. An ADE gives each agent a place to work, usually a git worktree and a terminal, and gives you ways to watch, review and ship what they do. Emdash calls itself one, and Orca calls itself an "agent development environment". The term overlaps almost entirely with "agent manager".
IDEs grew up around a person typing code. As more of the typing moves to agents, some tools reorganize the workspace around the agents instead, and a few call the result an ADE.
What an ADE includes
A workspace per agent, a way to see its state, and a way to review and ship its work.
The tools that use the label share a core: several agents running at once, each isolated on its own git worktree; a terminal or chat for each; status that tells you which agent needs you; and a diff view with git actions to review and ship the result. Many add extras, such as a built-in browser, an editor, issue-tracker integration or a phone app.
ADE vs IDE vs agent manager
An IDE centres you. An ADE or agent manager centres the agents.
The lines are blurry and vendors pick the word that suits their pitch.
| Term | Built around |
|---|---|
| IDE | You editing code, with an AI assistant on the side (Cursor, VS Code). |
| ADE | Running many agents, with editing as one tool among several (Emdash, Orca). |
| Agent manager | The same idea; Pane uses this name and leaves editing to the editor you already use. |
Who uses the term
Emdash and Orca lead with it; others say agent manager, multiplexer or control plane.
Emdash describes itself as a free, open source agentic development environment. Orca's site footer calls it "the agent development environment". Others describe the same kind of product differently: Tortie says agent multiplexer, Paseo says control plane, Pane says agent manager.
