opencode with multi-agent sessions on any os

TL;DR

OpenCode is the most-starred open source coding agent, a terminal UI that works with many model providers and uses language servers to understand your code. Pane runs several OpenCode sessions in parallel, each on its own branch in its own worktree, without tmux or manual git commands. It installs natively on Windows through Scoop or Chocolatey as well as on macOS and Linux. A single session is enough when you're working on one thing.

OpenCode is a full-screen terminal app, so it needs a real terminal to look right. Pane gives it one per task, each on its own branch.

What is OpenCode?

OpenCode is an open source coding agent for the terminal, MIT-licensed and, with about 212,000 GitHub stars, the most-starred project in the category. It works with many model providers and uses language servers for code intelligence. There's also a desktop app.

Quickstart

Install OpenCode, create a pane, open a terminal, type opencode.

  1. 1Install OpenCode

    macOS, Linux or WSL

    curl -fsSL https://opencode.ai/install | bash

    Windows

    scoop install opencode

    Any OS with Node.js

    npm i -g opencode-ai@latest
  2. 2Create a pane

Press Ctrl+N (⌘N on a Mac), pick the repo and branch, and create it. Pane makes a worktree for the pane.
  3. 3Start OpenCode

Open a terminal in the pane with Ctrl+Alt+1 (⌘⌥1 on a Mac), or pick Terminal from the Ctrl+T menu, and type opencode. To launch it with one keystroke next time, save it as a custom command; your first four custom commands get shortcuts.
Creating a pane for a new taskThe same dialog works for every agent. OpenCode runs in the terminal of the pane it creates.Pane 2.4.155 on Windows 11, repo inside WSL2

What works with OpenCode in Pane

Everything Pane does around the terminal works. Agent-specific extras are for its three built-in agents.

✓OpenCode's TUI in a Pane terminalPane's terminals are real terminals, so the full-screen interface renders and takes keys as usual.
✓Language servers per worktreeEach pane is a full checkout, so OpenCode's language servers index that worktree.
✓Native OpenCode launch and restoreSince Pane v2.4.170, choose OpenCode when you add an agent terminal. Pane sends the initial input once and restores the same saved conversation.
✕Named Sessions, Pane Chat and handoffOpenCode support is terminal-only. Pane's conversation history UI and native MCP/skills integration don't support it yet.
✓Its own worktree and branchEach pane is a separate git worktree, so several sessions never touch each other's files.
✓Diff view and git actionsSee what changed, commit, push, rebase and open a pull request from the pane.
✓Ports and env per paneEach pane gets its own port block in PANE_PORT, and .env files are copied into new worktrees.
~Status in the sidebarPane shows terminal activity. Detailed working, waiting and done states are tuned for Claude Code, Codex and Cursor.
~Resume after restartLayout and terminal output come back. Add a custom resume template if the agent can resume a conversation by ID.
✕Usage and cost trackingPane tracks usage for Claude Code and Codex only.

Parallel sessions, one branch each

A pane per feature replaces tmux and manual worktrees.

Running several OpenCode sessions usually means tmux panes and git worktree commands by hand. In Pane, each feature is a pane with its own worktree, branch, terminal and diff view, and the sidebar shows which one is active.

OpenCode next to other agents

Different agents, different models, separate branches.

Use OpenCode with one provider in one pane and Claude Code or Codex in another, or several OpenCode sessions on different models. Each pane has its own worktree, so they never edit the same files.

When one OpenCode session is enough

If you're working on one thing in one terminal, OpenCode on its own is fine. Pane helps once you want several sessions at once, each isolated and reviewable.
