Use your Claude subscription for coding agents

TL;DR

Your Claude Pro or Max plan covers Claude Code however you run it today: in a terminal, through the Agent SDK, or with claude -p. In May 2026 Anthropic announced that from June 15, Agent SDK and claude -p use would move to a separate monthly credit, then paused the change before it took effect. Tools that run Claude Code with your Claude login, Pane included, use your plan; IDEs like Cursor bill through their own plans. Anthropic says it will announce any update before anything changes.

Where things stand

Today, all Claude Code use on your Claude login counts against your plan's normal limits.

Anthropic's support page says it plainly: “For now, nothing has changed.” Claude Agent SDK use, claude -p and third-party apps signed in with your Claude account all still draw from your subscription's usage limits, the same as running claude in a terminal. Anthropic says it will share any update before anything takes effect.

The paused change

Announced in May, paused in June. Worth knowing in case it returns.

On May 13, 2026, Anthropic announced that from June 15, Agent SDK use and claude -p would stop counting toward plan limits and would draw from a separate monthly credit instead: $20 on Pro, $100 on Max 5x and $200 on Max 20x, with similar amounts on Team and Enterprise seats. Third-party tools built on the Agent SDK would have used that credit.

Before the date arrived, Anthropic paused it. Its support article is kept for reference but says the change is no longer taking effect on June 15. Conductor, one of the tools it would have affected, posted the same day that you can keep using your Claude plan as normal.

If the change does return, the distinction to watch is how a tool runs Claude: interactively in the claude CLI, or through the Agent SDK and claude -p.

Tools that use your plan

Anything that runs Claude Code with your Claude login.

ToolHow it runs Claude
PaneRuns the claude CLI in a real terminal, signed in with your account.
Claude SquadRuns the claude CLI in tmux sessions.
EmdashRuns agent CLIs in terminals on their own worktrees.
SupersetRuns Claude Code in real terminals in worktrees.
reconWatches claude CLI sessions you started in tmux.
ConductorDrives Claude Code through the Agent SDK with your Claude login.
Vibe KanbanRuns Claude Code in claude -p mode.

Pane runs the official claude binary interactively in a terminal, the same as you would, so it uses your plan under the current rules and under the paused plan alike.

Tools that bill separately

IDEs and API-key tools never used your Claude plan.

Cursor, Windsurf and Zed call Claude through their own backends or an API key you provide, and bill through their own plans or that key. Scripts and apps that use an Anthropic API key are billed per use on the API. None of these draw on your Pro or Max plan, with or without Anthropic's change.

How to check a tool

Look at how it signs in to Claude.

If a tool runs Claude Code and you signed in with your Claude account, it uses your plan. If it asks for an Anthropic API key, or charges you for AI use itself, it doesn't. For the subscription difference between terminal tools and IDEs in more depth, see Pane vs Cursor and Windsurf.
