Remote access

One click into every host in your SSH config

You already wrote ~/.ssh/config. Every Host entry has its address, user and key. Retyping ssh mini in a terminal is fine, but on a new machine, or a Windows PC, or when you have ten hosts, you want a list you can click.

Pane reads your SSH config and lists every host. Click one and you're in a terminal on that machine. It works the same on Windows, macOS and Linux, and it's free and open source.

What it reads

Host mini
  HostName 100.96.237.43
  User parsa
  IdentityFile ~/.ssh/id_ed25519

Pane uses the same file and keys your ssh command uses: ~/.ssh/config on Mac and Linux, and C:\Users\<you>\.ssh\config on Windows. Nothing is copied or uploaded. Edit the file and the list updates the next time you switch back to Pane.

Steps

  1. Download Pane and open it.
  2. Your hosts appear under SSH hosts in the sidebar.
  3. Click a host. Pane opens a terminal on it using your existing key.

No project or repository needed.

Same config on Windows and Mac

Copy your config file and key to the other machine, or keep one per machine. On Windows, OpenSSH looks in C:\Users\<you>\.ssh\. A private key there must be readable only by you:

icacls $env:USERPROFILE\.ssh\id_ed25519 /inheritance:r /grant:r "$($env:USERNAME):R"

Want more than a shell?

If the host also runs Pane, connect with Remote Pane instead. You get its files and running coding agents from a laptop or phone, and its dev servers at localhost on a laptop.
